6 Ways to Change Up Your Skincare Routine in Autumn

As we move into a new season, you might be noticing some changes to your skin, most commonly seen is the impairment and fragility of the skin barrier which can manifest as symptoms of dryness, sensitivity and a lacklustre look. The effects of summer activities showing in the skin, be that pigmentation from tanning, congestion from mask-wearing or dehydration from one too many G&T’s or ice creams.

But luckily, Autumn is also when you can really make a difference to your skin with more advanced treatments and products. If you’ve got a skin goal - it’s the perfect season to get started! Here are 6 ways to achieve better skin health this season.

Incorporate Actives

Now is the time to incorporate more active ingredients into your routine that you might have taken a break from in the summer months. Introducing a vitamin A into your routine offers a plethora of benefits; it is fantastic at increasing cell turnover, regulating oil flow and improving the appearance of pigmentation. Start slow to build up a tolerance, building up to every night. Targeting pigmentation is also easier in Autumn and Winter so make sure you’re using pigmentation targeting products containing tyrosinase inhibitors that will stop the overproduction of melanin.

Up Your Exfoliation Game

Exfoliators and resurfacing acids are a great way to press reset on your skin. We incorporate progressional grade resurfacers into many of our treatments to help refine skin texture and target specific skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne, or texture. For a focused resurfacing treatment, book in for our Glow and Go treatment.

At home, you can start to reintroduce your exfoliating acids if you took a break over summer. For pigmentation and texture, we love lactic acid. For targeting congestion and oiliness, use salicylic. And if acids aren’t your thing, then enzymatic exfoliators are a great alternative for sensitive skins or pregnancy.

Moisturise More

Moisturisers create a layer over the skin to stop water escaping so they are especially important when it's colder outside. After applying your hydrating serums make sure that you’re ‘locking’ them in with a moisturiser or oil.  Dry skins will benefit from incorporating rich oils and balms into their Autumn routine to replace the lost lipids and reduce flakiness. Cosmetics 27 Baume 27 and Synergie Skin DermaCalm are sensitive skin stalwarts.

Oilier and acne prone skin types might want to introduce a light moisturiser or oil like jojoba that you don’t need in summer to keep skin supple but overall should still steer clear of thicker products that may clog or contribute to the oiliness. The aptly named Esse Skincare Light Moisturiser and Synergie Skin UberZincare our top picks.

Book in for Advanced Treatments

‘Tis the season for advanced treatments! The cooler months are the perfect time to incorporate advanced, targeted treatments into your routine. Less sun exposure means that performing laser and needling based treatments are safer than in summer. Speak to your therapist about what advanced treatments would be best for you. Some of our favourites are:

Ultra Synergy- our needling treatment is a real allrounder for lacklustre, dehydrated skin. It will boost collagen and elastin as well as enhancing penetration of custom-blended serums to where they can work their magic.

Forever You- Want to defy gravity without the downtime? Our collagen-boosting wonder uses ClearLift laser and NIR technology to plump the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and tone and lift the lower area of the face.

Real Life Retouching - Want to permanently target those sun spots or reduce redness? Our Real Life Retouching uses AFT, the next generation of IPL, to target pigmentation irregularities, vascularity, and broken capillaries.

Absolutely Flawless -our definitive advanced treatment for congested and acne-prone skin. Using ClearSkin laser technology, it tackles those mischievous breakouts at a deeper level without the use of Roaccutane, antibiotics, or prescription ointments.

Keep Applying SPF

The biggest misconception is that SPF is no longer needed when summer ends. We are susceptible to sun damage all year round and it also provides protection from other environmental stressors such as pollution. Maintain the great habit of applying every day.

Keep Your Barrier Strong and Healthly

Your barrier is like a raincoat - designed to keep things from reaching your body. In windy and cold weather, along with sudden temperature changes, the barrier can become damaged and let the ‘rain’ deeper into the skin which in turn can cause inflammation, sensitivity and redness. Keep the temperatures low when you bathe and wash your face as hot water can strip the skin of oil and impair the barrier. Use barrier strengthening ingredients such as vitamin B, ceramides, hydrating serums and centella asiatica. Read more about how to keep a healthy barrier.
