6 Ways to Change Up Your Skincare Routine in Autumn

As we move into a new season, you might be noticing some changes to your skin.

One of the most common ones we see in clinic is the impairment and fragility of the skin barrier which can manifest as dehydration, dryness, sensitivity and a lacklustre look.

The effects of summer activities may also be showing in the skin, such as hyperpigmentation from tanning, dehydration or congestion from one too many Aperols or gelato

But luckily, autumn is also when you can really make a difference to your skin with more advanced treatments and products. If you’ve got a skin goal, it’s the perfect season to get started!

Here are 6 ways to achieve better skin health this season:

1. Book in for Advanced Treatments

‘Tis the season for advanced treatments! The cooler months are the perfect time to incorporate advanced, targeted treatments into your routine. Less sun exposure means that this time of year is a great time to perform laser and needling based treatments. Speak to your therapist about what advanced treatments would be best for you. Some of our favourites are:

Ultra Synergy

Our advanced treatment featuring microneedling a real allrounder for lacklustre, dehydrated skin. It will help boost collagen and elastin as well as enhancing the penetration of our custom cocktail of peptides, aminos and vitamins so they can work their magic.

Renew You

This advanced resurfacing treatment targets skin tone, texture and elasticity. The targeted laser stimulates healing, working on specific areas to reduce expression lines, acne scars and pigmentation, as well as stimulating collagen and reducing the appearance pore size. As it uses heat as its primary power, it’s not for the faint-hearted and there is downtime involved but, we promise, the results will make it more than worthwhile.

Forever You

Forever You uses the ClearLift laser to promote the growth of collagen as well as tighten the skin. This treatment also incorporates Near Infrared (NIR) technology which provides long and short-term benefits, by instantly lifting and sculpting the skin, as well as enhancing your skin’s natural radiance.

Real Life Retouching

Want to permanently target those sun spots or reduce redness? Our Real Life Retouching uses AFT, the next generation of IPL, to target pigmentation irregularities, vascularity, and broken capillaries.

Absolutely Flawless

Absolutely Flawless is our definitive advanced treatment for congested and acne-prone skin. Using ClearSkin laser technology, it tackles those mischievous breakouts at a deeper level without the use of Roaccutane, antibiotics or other prescriptions.

Did you know we offer treatment courses?

Generally we find that most treatments work best as part of an ongoing programme, so if you’re planning to visit us regularly why not invest in a course of bespoke treatments!

You are welcome to have all the same treatments in a course or mix and match them.

2. Incorporate Actives

Now is the time to incorporate more active ingredients into your routine, or to reintroduce them if you have taken a break from in the summer months.

(Re)introducing a vitamin A into your routine will have a plethora of benefits; it is fantastic at increasing cell turnover, regulating oil flow and reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Start slowly a few times a week to build up a tolerance, increasing to every night.

Targeting hyperpigmentation is also easier in autumn and winter so make sure you’re using targeted products that contain ingredients such as antioxidants, exfoliators, niacinamide and peptides.

3. Up Your Exfoliation Game

Exfoliators and resurfacing acids are a great way to press reset on your skin. We incorporate professional grade resurfacers into many of our treatments to help refine skin texture and target specific skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne, or texture. For a focused resurfacing treatment, book in for our Glow and Go facial.

At home, you can start to reintroduce your exfoliating acids if you took a break over summer. For pigmentation and texture we love lactic acid. For targeting congestion and oiliness, use salicylic. And if acids aren’t your thing, then enzymatic exfoliators are a great alternative for sensitive skins or pregnancy.

4. Extra Moisture and Hydration

Moisturisers create a layer over the skin to stop water escaping so they are especially important when it's colder outside. After applying your hydrating serums make sure that you’re ‘locking’ them in with a moisturiser or oil.

Dry skins will benefit from incorporating rich oils and balms into their autumn routine to replace the lost lipids and reduce flakiness.

Oilier and acne prone skin types might want to introduce a light moisturiser or an acne-friendly oil like jojoba, but do still steer clear of thicker products that may clog or contribute to oiliness.

5. Keep Applying SPF

The biggest misconception is that SPF is no longer needed when summer ends. We are susceptible to sun damage all year round and it also provides protection from other environmental stressors such as pollution. Maintain the great habit of applying every day.

6. Get that Barrier Function as Strong as Possible

Your barrier is like a raincoat - designed to keep things from reaching your body. In windy and cold weather, along with sudden temperature changes, the barrier can become damaged and let the ‘rain’ deeper into the skin which in turn can cause inflammation, sensitivity and redness.

Keep the temperatures low when you bathe and wash your face as hot water can strip the skin of oil and impair the barrier.

Use barrier strengthening ingredients such as vitamin B, probiotics, ceramides, hydrating serums and Centella Asiatica. Read more about how to keep a healthy barrier.
