How to Care for the Skin on Your Body
Your skin covers you from top to toe, but we often neglect the skin from the chest down. Let’s change that!
The skin on our body is so important in protecting us from environmental stressors, but for it to perform at it’s best - it needs nourishment and care, just as we do for our faces. It’s susceptible to the same conditions as the face, be that breakouts (mostly around the back and chest area), pigmentation from sun damage, or dryness, eczema and sensitivity. Overall there are fewer sebaceous glands on the body, so even if you’re oily, the skin on your body can still be prone to flakiness and dehydration and your body care routine should reflect that.
Caring for the skin on your body shouldn’t feel like a chore. Incorporating it into your routine as a ritualistic step will mean that you reap the rewards in mind, body and soul.
What can you do?
Show your body some love! Spend time massaging in your body creams, treat it to magnesium salt baths, and appreciate what it does for you. Regular touch with your body will connect you back to yourself and what an amazing job your skin, and body does.
Dry brushing is a real all-rounder technique that will assist with lymphatic drainage, exfoliation, and stimulating circulation - all of which will result in smoother, more radiant skin. Try to body brush 1-2 times a week on dry skin before you shower
Keep the skin clean - make sure you spend time cleansing your body in the shower and always shower immediately after workouts to reduce sweat clogging up pores. Just as you clean your pillowcases, clean your bed sheets regularly to prevent the transfer of dead skin cells, debris and oils back onto the skin. Keep the temperature warm, not hot so you don’t dry your skin out.
Protect your skin. If you’re exposing areas of the skin to sunlight, then you need to apply SPF and ideally an antioxidant too. Common forgotten areas include your chest and hands - both of which are exposed to the same as the face.
How can treatments help?
Advanced treatments are fantastic at targeting specific skin conditions such as breakouts, pigmentation, or uneven skin texture.
Our Body Werk treatment is our most advanced option for the body. We use the most advanced laser technology available to target specific skin conditions such as pigmentation, unwanted tattoos, vein removal and scarring and texture helping you improve the health and appearance of your birthday suit. Oh, and we can remove body hair from delicate areas too whilst you’re with us.
For breakout-prone bodies, our Back to Front treatment is a tailored facial for your back. It includes a resurfacing phase, extractions, a humic acid peat mask and our Ultra-Powerful LED. For even better results, add our ClearSkin acne laser onto this treatment to kill p. acnes bacteria and reduce scarring.
What products support improvement?
To care for your body, you still need to be selective with your skincare products. If you wouldn’t freely use your body wash on your face, then it’s not good enough! Your body is as susceptible to drying ingredients such as sulfates and alcohols so make sure your body care routine is free from them.
Choose a body wash with nourishing ingredients and no harsh soaps or foaming agents. We love the Esker Washes; choose from clarifying, firming, or nourishing. Your body will benefit from an oil - argan oil and marula are fantastic for very dry skins. Esse Body Oil is adecadent, aromatic body oil that nourishes your whole body. For a lighter option, look for jojoba which you can find in Esker Restorative Oil.
If you are experiencing breakouts on the chest or back, a body-tailored exfoliator will be a great help in shifting clogged pores and refining skin texture. Synergie Skin’s Bacne is great for reducing breakouts as well as targeting keratosis pilaris - the build-up of keratin which is also known as ‘chicken skin’.
If your skin is more sensitive, a b-vitamin rich moisturizer will help to restore the natural skin barrier and reduce any dry, flakey patches. We love Synergie Skin’s B-juvenate cream formulated with niacinamide, shea butter and vitamin E for intense nourishment.
