6 Ways to Maintain Your Glow through Winter

Skin feeling a little lacklustre and not it’s usual beautiful best? That’s totally normal around this time of year. Winter throws many challenges at our skin, from lower humidity due to colder weather and central heating which literally sucks out the moisture out of your skin, to chapped dry skin due to freezing temps and a compromised barrier. But there’s always hope and of course, lots of practical ways you can keep your skin healthy and thriving in the colder months. Here are a few of our favourite ways...

Layer Up

A great way to tailor about your skincare routine is to think about it like your wardrobe. As the seasons change, we also add or take away certain layers depending on the temperature or conditions, and our skincare is the same. Whilst core stages of the routine will stay the same (think active serums, SPF, cleansers) it’s certainly beneficial to make some tweaks in terms of textures you are using and the amount of layers to suit the weather and the effects that it has on your skin. In winter, this means including slightly richer formulations that will provide the skin with an extra barrier from the cold. A.D.C. Beauty 01 High-Performance Moisturiseris great for oilier and normal complexions. Baume 27 is the ultimate comfort for dry and sensitive skin in winter.

Don’t Neglect Your Nighttime Routine

Make sure you’re protecting and hydrating your skin at night especially if you’re a fan of central heating as your skin will be exposed to 8 uninterrupted hours of low humidity air. Cream masks are a great nighttime treat 3x a week as they’ll protect the skin from dry air as well as replenishing moisture reserves and restoring the barrier function. We love Esse Skincare Cream Mask and Synergie Skin Masquerase. Having a humidifier in the bedroom is also great to help rebalance the humidity and maintain hydration. And on nights when you’re not masking, make sure you’re applying a cream or oil to lock in moisture.

Book In

Winter is a really great time to focus on more advanced treatments as the risk of sun exposure is a lot lower which is great as it’s important to protect your skin from sun exposure after these treatments. For collagen and elastin stimulation and improved skin texture, we love our no-downtimeForever You treatment which uses ClearLift Laser and NIR technology to improve skin density, texture and tone. For texture and scarring, ourRenew You treatment uses an ablative laser that works brilliantly on skin resurfacing, facial scars, enlarged pores, rough skin texture, hyper pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. For general skin health and winter skin that needs some extra TLC, ourEssential facial is a fantastic all-rounder that deeply nourishes your skin, includes light extractions, exfoliation, vitamin infusion and LED light therapy too. It’s a great skin reset.

Massage More

When we are cold, our blood vessels constrict to keep in vital heat which is very clever but it can lead to us looking a little lacklustre and pasty so it’s a good idea to stimulate some all-important circulation every so often and facial massage is a great way to do that! Try and take 15 minutes a couple of times a week to really massage and treat your skin. Fast upwards movements and soft tapping and pinching are fantastic and getting the blood flow going. Or, go up a level and incorporate a gua sha tool.

Turn Down The Heat

High temperatures strip the skin of it’s natural oils and compromises the skin barrier too. We know everyone likes to feel cosy at this time of year, but as much as you can limit the temperature on your baths and showers. A good way to know if the water is too hot is to run your wrist under the tap or shower. If it flushes red, it’s too hot.

Incorporate Oils

Our skin barrier is made up of fats and essential fatty acids which can be found in high quality, plant sourced oils. If skin is feeling scaly and tight, a rich oil can work wonders, making it feel supple again and helping to restore the barrier function. If you’re more on the oily side, look for low molecular weight oils such as jojoba and grapeseed oil. If you need more nourishment, macadamia, argan, and squalene are great options.
