You're breaking out

Do. not. pick. that. spot. Ever, ever. However tempting it may be, resist the urge (don’t do it!) and reach for products containing salicylic acid instead. The clever anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory acid (usually found in exfoliating toners, serums and professional chemical peels) reduces oil flow and targets active spots.

If your breakouts are making regular appearances, then consider adding vitamin A into your night routine. Vitamin A helps to balance keratinisation and decrease pore blockage together with excess sebum production andalso has the ability to enhance new collagen — that’s essential for skin healing and supporting scar treatment.

You're going on a long flight

So you’re going somewhere lovely (fun!) but there’s a long flight (ugh). When it comes to in-air skincare, it pays to be prepared. 

First, complete your skincare routine at home. Airport or airplane bathrooms don’t tend to have good face-washing water—water quality and pH can vary. Use a nourishing face mist onboard instead. 

You know avoiding skin dehydration is the goal. So drink water. It improves circulation and prevents water retention. Applying a thin layer of cream mask also protects skin from the harsh air conditioning that can cause eczema or breakouts. 

Achieve goddess-level hydration with concentrated cold-pressed oils. Odacite’s hydration drops will be your travel essential. Apply 2-3 drops directly onto your face or mix it with your moisturiser to boost its hydrating properties.

You started using retinol

Skincare star retinol is great but it’s also seriously potent, so use with caution. First-timers should start things slow and low, introducing retinol to your night routine gradually (we’d suggest adding it once a week, then working your way up to every other night). 

More on that retinol potentness, skin protection is key here. Retinol makes your skin UV sensitive so it’s important to wear SPF each morning and avoid any extra exfoliation. Moisturise in the day as normal, and if your skin needs some extra hydration at night then allow your retinol product to absorb for 3-5 minutes before following up with your night moisturiser. 

And remember to mention your retinol usage to your facialist so they can assess what procedure your skin can handle!

You're back from a sunny holiday

A little too much sun, sunscreen, cocktails, and chlorine can (sadly) lead to long-term skin consequences like fine lines, dryness, and hyperpigmentation. So after an indulgent summer hols, your skin is in need of deep cleaning. Now’s when you should book in for a facial to tackle whatever is lingering on your skin’s top layer (whether it’s dead skin cells, oil or debris). 

Then make sure to sleep, eat whole foods and veggies, exercise, and of course, drink more water. Once you’re hydrated and detoxed, use the right products for your post-holiday skin. To tackle sun-damage use products with vitamin C. If your skin is feeling tight, dry or flaky then exfoliate. And boost moisture with hydrating serums such as hyaluronic acid.

You've got puffy eyes

Dark circles and puffy eyes are a constant beauty woe. Treat tired eye bags with caffeinated tea bags! Caffeine contains powerful antioxidants that can increase blood flow to your skin. 

It’s said to also protect against UV rays, AND slow the aging process. Green tea, in particular, has anti-inflammatory effects. 

Ready? Steep two tea bags for 3-5 minutes, let them chill in the fridge for 20 minutes, then squeeze and apply to your under-eye area for 15-30 minutes. 

Ran out of tea bags (and about to make a salad)? Cool cucumber slices and chilled teaspoons work too! Applying cold to the area for a few minutes can help the blood vessels constrict quickly for some temporary relief.

You've just finished working out

Nicely done. Now, first thing (apart from drinking plenty of water). Wash your face. Use a gentle cleanser because when you sweat your skin’s exposed to increased water loss and dehydration which can be aggravated by harsh soaps. 

Next, rebalance your skin’s pH levels with a face mist like Esse Toner Plus (doesn’t that feel fab?). Then apply a hyaluronic acid-based serum which helps capture moisture back into the skin. Essence 27 contains HA as well as additional vitamin C which provides your skin with antioxidant protection for the day.

Don’t forget moisturiser if you’re heading to work. Soleil Toujours is usually a good all-round option which includes sun protection, hydrating and nourishing peptides and a blend of antioxidants.

You're going on a sunny holiday

Going to be spending swathes of time in the sun? Lucky you. Prep ahead, the day before you fly is not the time for a facial or an at-home exfoliation session, okay? 

For happy holiday skin make sure to take SPF (a sensible 30-50) and vitamin C. Vitamin C brightens and prevents pigmentation but its main draw is boosting your SPF’s efficiency. Glorious. Don’t forget to apply SPF before you hit the beach — and to reapply!  

Sun exposure dehydrates the skin, so carry a bottle of a refreshing face mist to hydrate skin throughout the day. And then pop a hydrating sheet mask into your luggage before you set off — it’s the easiest hot holiday saviour.

You're sunburnt

Cool, nourish and soothe your poor skin (hey, it happens to the best of us). Sunburn recovery is all about hydration, hydration, hydration. 

First take a warm shower to take the heat out of the burn. Then, If you have access to an aloe vera plant, get involved with skincare from mother nature herself — use that aloe jelly! 

No aloe nearby? Use a hydrating sheet mask instead, it’s even better when cooled in the fridge before. Lather on a nourishing moisturiser to seal the compromised skin barrier and to support skin regeneration. Probiotics, Centela Asiatica extract and vitamin B are some of the best ingredients to comfort a weak, sun-damaged, skin barrier.

You've got a big event

You *can* glow on the day even if you don’t have days or months to prepare. Simply start the night before with an AHAs or enzyme exfoliant. Had your beauty sleep? On the day, massage your face to stimulate blood flow, using a sculpting tool or roller to drain toxins. 

Next put on a hyaluronic acid-based sheet mask. Whatever you do, avoid detoxifying masks on the day or even 2-3 days before as they can bring out spots. Add vitamin C serum to boost your glow and then moisturise to lock in the serums.

Lastly, drink lots of water! And avoid caffeine. For every cup with caffeine, drink two cups of water on top of the recommended amount. Alright skin, it’s showtime.

You're going skiing

With freezing temps, harsh winds and blazing sunshine in the mountains, skin goes on its own wild ride when skiing. The combination of higher altitude and UV rays reflected by snow means you should be extra vigilant with SPF — applying at least a teaspoon of the stuff to your face — and reapplying every two hours (hit the slopes with a travel-sized SPF, lip balm and big sunglasses in your ski jacket). Don’t miss the oft-forgotten spots; lips, ears, neck, the underside of chin, scalp, hands, and around the eyes. Add a serum and rich moisturiser to seal and protect even more. 

And apres-ski? Pamper with some soothing sheet masks, layering up with your night cream and oil before bed. Bliss.

Your skin looks tired

Rise and shine, skin! Wake up tired skin by exfoliating with lactic acid or enzymes (they allow dead skin cells to easily shed, leaving you luminous and hydrated), plump tired skin by using a hyaluronic acid serum and apply a vitamin C serum for a beautiful glow. To protect skin against the elements and keep hydration locked in, use a skin barrier-boosting ceramide-rich moisturiser. 

With skincare products sorted, make sure to drink lots of water, and eat your water too! Consuming water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon revitalizes skin. And most importantly, have a good night’s beauty sleep! That’s when skin regenerates.

Your skin is irritated

When skin’s sending out an SOS, try to eliminate the source of irritation. Is it product or diet-related? Remove culprits and see how your skin settles. If it’s from a product, then book in with a skin specialist to adjust your routine. If it’s food-related then it’s worth taking an allergy test. 

Product-wise, use those with soothing ingredients like Centella Asiatica extract which you can find in C27 products, they support tissue healing. Use a gentle cleanser (a cream or Baume is best) and avoid a gel cleanser (and anything exfoliating!). For intensive treatment use a concentrated serum with live probiotics.

You have dry lips

Exfoliate, honey. A DIY sugar and honey scrub removes dead skin and rehydrates and smoothes lips. Apply it on your lips with a brush and then rub it in. Waking up with dry lips? It’s time to get a humidifier to add moisture to your air at home. Then lock in moisture with products that keep water locked in the skin like coconut oil and almond oil which has a high level of fatty acids. And of course, drink plenty of water. 

What should you avoid? Citrus and acidic fruit. It stings and can lead to more flaking.

You're getting married

Your big day is coming up (hooray!) if you’ve got skin concerns, don’t leave it until the last minute to tackle them. Start monthly facial sessions with a skincare therapist (hiya!) four-to-six months in advance to make sure your skin is in fighting shape.

For fresh, vibrant skin start using products with exfoliating acids (AHAs) at home to remove dead skin cells that can leave complexions looking dull, use salicylic acid to tackle blackheads or hormonal spots and start drinking green tea daily—many people swear by its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to help brighten skin and reduce acne. 

And don’t try new products from three weeks before your weddings—that includes skincare, haircare, make-up and even washing powder! If you get a reaction it could take weeks to calm down.

You have blackheads

It may be tempting but picking is a definite don’t. Avoid pore strips and other home extraction methods, while they may help remove gunk, they can also take elements we actually want like natural oils and hair follicles. Removing those can irritate your skin and ultimately result in more blackheads! And leave the heavy-duty doing to the experts, those pro tools can lead to scratches and wounds if used incorrectly. 

Instead of trying to scrub deep blackheads away, gently exfoliate regularly with AHAs and BHAs like glycolic and salicylic acid, use detoxifying masks such as clay, peat or charcoal and have regularly deep cleansing facials. If you must extract at home, spend some time in a warm shower to loosen your pores first…

You've got a big pimple

Stop squeezing, poking, prodding! It could be pushing the dermal debris deeper into your pore. Ouch. If your deep pimple is swollen and painful, reach for an ice cube, wrap it in a thin cloth and set it on the offending spot for 3-4 minutes and repeat throughout the day. 

If you can’t get to a skin professional to drain the cystic breakout, then use a mild cleanser to wash your skin before treating your spot a product containing 2% salicylic acid twice-daily (any more application can dry out and irritate instead of heal). 

The safe way to drain a pimple at home is by applying a warm compress onto the whitehead for 10-15 minutes, a couple of times daily until the pimple releases pus and heals.

You've had a big night out

Your skin gets hangovers too. Drinking dehydrates skin (and leads to premature aging), leaving skin bloated, puffy, and dull. Avoid hangover skin by eating food with your drinks to slow down sugar release and having water between drinks. 

If it’s too late for that, take off makeup before falling into bed to avoid clogged pores and slather on a face cream that contains ceramides to keep skin hydrated and get lots of sleep.

For a fast fix, use a hyaluronic acid sheet mask, stash it in the fridge for extra de-puffing coolness. Roll your face with a cold jade or rose quartz roller to promote lymph drainage and reduce puffiness. And apply an extra hydrating serum or oil along with your moisturizer. Stay hydrated and caffeinated!

You have redness

Redness is a sign of sensitivity, so reach for products that will soothe it—and avoid washing your face in a hot shower! Opt for ingredients that’ll make capillaries stronger like vitamin B or C, products with probiotic or niacinamide are great at rebuilding weak skin barriers. Redness is also partly sun damage, so make sure to use high SPF all year round. Skip out on saunas and steam rooms, too. 

In autumn and wintertime, it’s worth undergoing IPL or AFT treatments which reduce redness and broken veins but also help to condition your skin by making it stronger and less likely to show signs of sensitivity, like redness.

Your skin is inflamed

Dry, sensitive and inflamed? Listen. It’s your body’s way of saying something’s up. First things first, introduce a diet rich in antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, E and omega 3 fatty acids. It’ll fight the inflammation proteins and boost the skin's natural barrier.

If skin’s itchy and taut, you might be washing with water that’s too hot. Switch to lukewarm and use a gentle cleanser, followed by a ceramide-packed moisturizer. Look for products with soothing ingredients like calendula, chamomile, Centella Asiatica and Resveratrol.

When picking sun protection, it’s important to avoid products that include irritants like perfumes. Try to stick with mineral sunscreens, avoid synthetic varieties—titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are more agreeable to sensitive skin.

You've just moved to a big city

Water, food, and moving stress are major culprits when it comes to skincare in a new city. If the water quality’s different from back home it can affect your skin when you’re showering, so invest in a shower water filter and introduce double cleansing to your routine (oil-based cleanser first, and then normal cleanser). Pollution or smog (ahem, London) can also leave the skin looking dull and sluggish. Use an antioxidant serum with high levels of stable vitamin C to slow down damage and for an extra boost use a weekly detoxifying mask to draw out any impurities that can build up.

A period of high stress can wreak havoc on the skin and bring on eczema, acne, psoriasis and increased cortisol levels. Try to keep zen with me-time and add salicylic acid to your routine.

You've had a bad reaction to a product

No matter what reaction you're having (red, itchy, inflamed, sensitive…), the first thing to do is stop using the culprit product. If it’s something major like swelling in the face, eyes, throat or anything of that sort go seek medical attention, stat.  

For small irritations, there’s a few things you can do; wash your face with cold water and a mild cream cleanser (avoid hot water right now). Reduce inflammation with ibuprofen, dermatologists may prescribe a corticosteroid cream or an oral steroid medication. Reduce allergies or itchiness with an antihistamine and use a soothing fragrance-free moisturizer to give your skin the TLC it’s craving. 

Take a break from your skincare and slowly reintroduce products back in, writing down everything you used and while you’re at it take a snap of the ingredients list!

You have hyperpigmentation

You're pregnant

Be patient, gentle and ready to adapt as your skin can change each trimester (joy!). For breakouts, calm skin with topical probiotics and vitamin B in a form of niacinamide. The Vestige Verdant Organic Peat Mask is a great option if you need a purifying boost and support with decongesting your complexion. If your skin’s dry and dehydrated then nourish it with gentle oils and baumes (but avoid essential oils and intense scents, they can overstimulate and cause contractions).

You don't know what treatment to get

You’ve got the skincare world at your fingertips, but don’t know where to go. Ask yourself, “what is my main concern, what do I want to achieve?” and book in for a consultation MOT. Then you can ask the right questions to see which treatment suits and what alternatives are out there. Don't be pressured into having treatment right away. 

To make an informed decision ask: Who will carry out the treatment? How long has the practitioner been doing them? What results can I expect to achieve? Is there a detailed post-treatment plan for me? How detailed is the assessment of your face and facial dynamics; is a photographic record kept? What is the treatment environment like? How well are the skincare experts listening to you?

You have whiteheads

While blackheads can be pushed out, whiteheads are closed inside the pore which makes them trickier to handle. 

What to do? Stay hydrated. Hands off! Don’t touch your face and avoid picking and popping. Clean your smartphone and sunglasses regularly. Change your pillowcases 2 to 3 times per week (really!). Cleanse your skin regularly using lukewarm water — and wash your makeup off every night! And don’t share your makeup or applicators… 

Our hero products here have vitamin A and tea tree oil to decrease inflammation, salicylic acid to decrease oil production and opts for a zinc or titanium oxide sunscreen.

You've got sensitive skin

Sensitive skin can be caused by so many different things. In general it’s best to avoid skincare products with harsh ingredients and brush attachments (the less ingredients the better!), avoid drinking too much coffee or alcohol, smoking and make sure to get some proper sleep. 

Cleanse every night, moisturizing twice a day and wearing SPF as UVA and UVB rays can irritate the skin. Use hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serum to deeply hydrate and restore the natural barrier of the skin and add in a deeply moisturising mask to soothe, restore and calm. It might be tempting to take a hot shower but it strips your skin of crucial moisture, so lower the temp

Stress is another sneaky culprit. Keep it at bay with regular exercise and relaxation techniques.

You've just had a facial

Stop touching your face! It’ll be supple and glowing but also temporarily sensitive to touch, harsh ingredients and the sun. If you've had an extraction performed, this is especially true. So give your skin a day to absorb the goodness without washing your face and forgo make up for a day or two to keep pores happy. Put any acid or retinol product on hold for three days and no gym or hot yoga post-facial, your skin’s already been steamed, adding heat could lead to sensitivity and broken capillaries.

At home, change your pillowcases to avoid pressing bacteria into your skin and use only freshly-washed towels on your skin. And finally, stay hydrated and make that glowing skin last longer.

You're coming for a facial

Skip any strong at-home facial treatments the week before your appointment and any exfoliation treatments a few days prior. Your skin therapist will be providing this crucial step as part of your facial treatment.

Wear your make-up.  Or don't.  Either way your skin therapist will cleanse your skin as part of any of our facial treaments.

Avoid sun bathing or tanning beds at least a week before a facial. A sunburn will make for a very unpleasant experience as well as defeat the purpose of getting a facial. Sun damage is the number one culprit behind aging so avoid sun worshipping and tanning beds altogether and wear sunscreen every day. 

No waxing or shaving 24 to 48 hours before or after a facial. Before will allow for a very uncomfortable experience that could include tingling or stinging. Afterwards could cause breakouts or worse, tearing the skin. Give your skin a few days to enjoy the fresh clean feeling before inflicting pain on it.

Avoid injectables.

If you're getting Botox or Fillers, it should be at least 48 hours to 2 weeks before a facial. We can’t massage skin that’s been freshly injected as there is a risk of moving the injectable around to the wrong area.

Be prepared to discuss your skin concerns and what your goals might be. Your skin therapist is an expert in skin and skin care so they will help you with a specific plan of treatments and products to achieve your goals.

Know your skincare routine: names and main ingredients of the skin care products you are using at home. Make a list if need. Discuss it with your therapist. Knowing these details will help the skin expert make recommendations products you may want to add or delete from your at-home routine.

Let your skin professional know any medications, medical conditions, allergies, and/or past skin conditions you may have had. Even over-the-counter medications can affect your skin, so it is good for them to know what may be contributing to your concerns and the way your skin reacts to certain products.

We recommend that you discontinue the use of any products that will thin your skin such as Tretinoin and Accutane at least three months before getting a facial. These medications that thin your skin, can make way for some serious damage if a facial is performed before the skin has had time to rebuild to its natural state.

Are you getting your skin ready for a big event? If you've never had a facial before and don't know how your skin will respond, inform your skin therapist about your concerns in order to recommend the right treatment/s that will help you put your best face forward.

We recommend that you schedule your appointment accordingly. We suggest that you do not book a facial the day of or the day before a major event such as your wedding. Most likely your skin will be fine but let’s not chance trying something new before your big day. You are probably already stressed enough. 

Will you break out after a facial? Most likely, no, but there is always a small possibility a breakout may occur. Depending on the condition of your skin, if you aren’t used to exfoliating, any excess oil will be released after a facial. This may result in a breakout but don’t worry, it will be gone in a few days and your skin will still be glowing. On that note, continue exfoliating at home to keep the skin glowing and the excess oil from building up again.

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. This is your time and you want to get the most of it. Allow yourself time to fill out any necessary forms and to talk to your skin therapist. If you're late, it'll cut into your facial treatment. We want to put your best face forward but can’t do that if you don’t give them adequate time to work with. 

Be open minded and willing to make changes. You have chosen to have a facial for a reason and we are here to help. If a product isn’t working for you, it's our job to tell you what will work best for your skin type. Our skin therapists are well trained in skin care and have great skin for a reason. We are here to share our knowledge, offer advice and make sure you continue to glow long after you have left the clinic.

You have milia

Those little white bumps on your skin may not be whiteheads, but milia. Bumps from pockets of trapped keratin (the protein that makes up your skin). The milia-making culprits are usually thick creams, layers of sunscreen and not exfoliating enough.

It’sreally important not to extract at home as they’re under the epidermis but to seek expert help. We can add milia removal to every treatment!  

Try and prevent them by using an AHA/BHA exfoliator once a week, a mist between SPF applications, lighter moisturizers and don’t forget to clean your phone, glasses and the inside of your helmet if you ride with antibacterial wipes to prevent debris from being trapped under the skin.

You have chicken skin

You know those annoying tiny arm bumps that won’t go away? These tiny bumps or pimples are actually dead skin cells clogging hair follicles and they’re called keratosis pilaris. These pesky but not usually painful bumps can usually appear on dry skin (hello, winter) and sometimes during pregnancy too. 

Treat it by exfoliating with a topical AHA/BHA and a soothing, hydrating lotion like Synergie B-juvEnate.
